Older PC: Upgrade to Windows 7 or 8?

Do you choose Windows 7 knowing that it’s not the latest and greatest, or do you choose Windows 8 and force yourself to use the new interface? Here’s some insight…

The quick and dirty answer is…

If you’re using an older computer, your best bet for maximum compatibility is Windows 7. Before you purchase an upgrade, though, I would highly recommend running the Windows 7 upgrade advisor.  This application will verify that the hardware and software on/in your computer will work when you upgrade to Windows 7. You can download the upgrade advisor by clicking here.

Windows 8′s new interface and features work best with touch enabled computers, so upgrading older hardware to Windows 8 will result in a less-than-optimal experience. You can download the Windows 8 upgrade assistant by clicking here to verify compatibility if your set on using it, however. Windows 7, while technically being the older software, is still being implemented by many companies, and Microsoft has promised a long support cycle for updates and fixes, so don’t feel forced into Windows 8. You’ll most likely need a new computer before Windows 7 is officially phased out.
