The BlackBerry Strikes Back

Remember Research In Motion, the producer of BlackBerry that continues to surprise us because it still exists? Yeah, that Research In Motion.  Well, it looks as if the BlackBerry is pushing to make a comeback (again) and it might be for real this time (seriously!).

RIM announced last Wednesday the release of BlackBerry 10 and the two new handsets which will come with it — a phone with the traditional physical QWERTY keyboard and a fully touchscreen version.  So how is RIM going to make a comeback with these devices?  Currently BlackBerry phones are mostly found in a corporate setting, usually as a phone a company issues an employee.  First RIM has to keep these customers, which it has been unfortunately hemmorhaging these past couple of years.  Then they have to bring back customers that have switched over to greener pastures.

The two new BlackBerry models are the all-touchscreen Z10 and the physical keyboard Q10.  The Z10 could really help to bring back customers he left for the likes of the iPhone or Android touchscreen phones.  The Q10 is a definite upgrade to the existing physical keyboard model, which will help BlackBerry to retain that niche market.  BlackBerry is also making a big push to upgrade its app availability but it will be a definite uphill battle to be competitive against the app offerings of i-Devices and Android devices.

One final thing.  BlackBerry dropped the name Research In Motion.  So while I predicted that RIM would no longer exist in the near future, it was BlackBerry that killed off the name.

More Storage?  Yes Please.

Like lots of storage?  Like the Apple iPad?  Well you’re in luck!

Apple announced the addition of a 128GB model to its newest iPad lineup this past Tuesday.  The new storage model will still have all the same specs as existing iPads: dual-core A6X processor, 10 hour battery life, and 2GB RAM.  Of course the 128GB version punches in with a hefty price tag.  The Wi-Fi only model will be offered for $799 and the 4G LTE model will be available for $929.

The larger storage size may not appeal to a large chunk of existing (and potential) iPad users, but there is definitely a market for it.  Professional users, such as photographers, medical professionals, and those in the design field, may see a huge benefit of having the larger storage model.  Those who stockpile movies and games may also find use out of it.

The 128GB iPad will be available next week on Tuesday, February 5.
