Amazon Slashes Prices on the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD Tablet

Amazon had a lot of big news today. The retailer just announced plans to launch one of its popular tablets in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. However, the even bigger news is that the company is also lowering prices on the exact same tablet in the U.S.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD first launched back in September 2012, with prices ranging from $299 to $499. Now, Amazon says it will lower starting prices to $269 for the WiFi version and $399 for the 4G. The WiFi version comes packing a choice of 16GB or 32GB of storage, with the 4G LTE version bumping that up to 32GB or 64GB.

Other features include a dual-core, 1.5GHz OMAP 4470 processor, a 1920-by-1200 (1080p) display, and Dolby Audio dual stereo speakers. It also has the Amazon Silk browser, a front-facing camera, and access to over 23 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books, audio books, and various apps through Amazon.

The Kindle Fire HD also has plenty of Amazon perks, including X-Ray for Movies, X-Ray for Textbooks, Immersion Reading, Whispersync for Voice and Whispersync for Games.

"We're thrilled with customer reaction to Kindle Fire HD 8.9". Customers tell us they love our large-screen version of Kindle Fire HD for web browsing, email, gaming, watching TV shows, reading magazines, and more," said Dave Limp, VP of Amazon Kindle. "As we expand Kindle Fire HD 8.9" to Europe and Japan, we've been able to increase our production volumes and decrease our costs. Across our business at Amazon, whenever we are able to create cost efficiencies like this, we want to pass the savings along to our customers."

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is currently the highest-resolution, largest-display Kindle Fire available. It's also worth noting that shoppers can opt to receive special offers on the Kindle, to receive the lowest purchase price possible.

The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet includes X-Ray For Movies, an Amazon exclusive.
