Report: Incoming next-gen Volkswagen Golf R may produce more than 300bhp

AutoExpress.co.uk reportedly learned that the next generation top-spec Volkswagen Golf R—the one to be based on the incoming and current seventh generation Golf—will have more than 300bhp. A Volkswagen insider supposedly said that if anything, the new model will offer at least a 20bhp boost over the outgoing model, which was good for 265bhp.

It would be interesting to note though that should the Golf R surpass the 300bhp mark, product redundancy may occur as that puts it in line with the nearly equivalent Audi S3 luxury sports compact. Though the difference would be that the Golf R would be the hottest and most exclusive Golf, like the previous generation Volkswagen Golf R36 and R32 über-hatches, and above all, the last generation Golf R.

Volkswagen’s commonplace 2.0L turbocharged TFSI engine will be put to use again driving all four wheels. Though the next generation model is said to benefit from a much lighter all-wheel system with an estimated difference of only 100kg over the Volkswagen GTI. The last generation’s model weight more than 150kg more than the familial GTI.

Speaking of which, the new seventh GTI’s optional electromechanically controlled limited slip diff will be put up front as standard on the new Golf R, providing torque vectoring to hone in understeer. Unlike the current GTI, stability and traction control will also be specially tuned for the R and can be completely defeated with the touch of a button.

Time frame? We can supposedly expect the new Golf R by next September with UK sales beginning in early 2014.
