2014 Cadillac XTS Adds Turbo V-6, Parking Tech

Cadillac's XTS full-size luxury sedan is entering its second model year—with some new high-tech options and a more powerful engine available.
And no, it's not in the form of a V-8.

Yet it should be just as good, if not better, than one. The new 3.6-liter Twin-Turbo V-6 that's available in the 2014 Cadillac XTS makes 410 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which according to GM makes it one of the most power-dense six-cylinder engines on the market.

The new engine, which will also be offered in the 2014 Cadillac ATS and CTS sport sedans, makes its peak torque over a very broad range—from 1,900 rpm all the way to 5,600 rpm—and has some significant improvements throughout—including all-new block casting, stronger connecting rods, domed aluminum pistons, and a different direct-injection system. The two turbochargers make about 12 psi of boost.

Just as with the base 304-horsepower V-6, the new Twin-Turbo engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive models get a Haldex system with an electronic limited-slip differential that splits torque between the rear wheels, while Magnetic Ride Control, a real-time damping system, and rear air springs, altogether give the XTS a good blend of responsiveness and ride comfort. Front Brembo brakes are standard.

Twin-Turbo models should appear much like their more pedestrian siblings—don't look for special ground effects of flashy bodywork here—although they so get a unique grille and badging.

Front-wheel-drive versions of the XTS now include electric power steering (EPS), and can for 2014 be optioned with a new Automatic Parking Assist system that will essentially steer the car itself into a parking space, with the driver only needed to operate the accelerator and brake. EPS can help improve gas mileage, but it appears that mileage for the front-wheel-drive model carries over, at 17 mpg city, 28 highway (AWD models get 17/26 mpg). Fuel economy ratings for the new higher-power engine aren't yet available.

As with 2013, the 2014 Cadillax XTS is offered in Luxury Collection, Premium Collection, and Platinum Collection versions, with some of the standout features carrying over including a 14-speaker Bose Studio Surround Sound system, Head-Up Display, Opus leather seating, heated steering wheel, real wood trim, and the voice-command and capacitive touch-screen-based Cadillac User Interface (CUE).

A rear-seat DVD entertainment system, with screens that fold out of the backs of the front seats, is newly available for 2014, as is a new rear-seat armrest design that includes wood trim, radio controls, and controls for the available sunshade (an opaque sunroof shade is newly offered). Intellibeam headlamps and a new front-seat memory feature are also among the new items for 2014.
