BMW 3-Series Recall Adds 42,000 Vehicles To Airbag Action

After conducting its internal investigation, BMW now says that it will recall 42,000 2002 through 2003 BMW 3-Series vehicles as part of the massive Takata airbag recall we covered in April.

At the time the airbag recall story broke, BMW said it would participate but did not immediately know how many vehicles were involved.

At issue is the front passenger-side airbag that may not inflate properly during a collision. The defective stems from faulty manufacturing by Takata Corp., the Japanese company that makes the airbag part.

As reported in the Los Angeles Times
, a BMW spokesman said, “We have not had a single cases of a reported failure in our cars, but it is the same problem, yes.”
According to BMW, owners of 2002-2003 3-Series cars affected by the recall will be notified by first-class mail and later advised when replacement parts are available so that they can contact a BMW dealer to make an appointment to have the airbags replaced.

In the meantime, BMW owners with any questions or concerns may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
