Dino PC Angry Lizard 3770K review - powerful gaming PC

The Angry Lizard PC boasts a 3.5GHz Intel Core i7-3770K processor which has been overclocked to 4.6GHz. The Core i7 used here achieves higher performance through Hyperthreading, which doubles the number of processing threads which can be handled simultaneously, making eight virtual cores.

This speed trick is reflected in a PCMark 7 score of 6930 points, placing it at the top of the performance chart for general application and entertainment use. This result was helped along by a fast 256GB Plextor M5S SSD.

The processor is cooled by a large Xigmatek Dark Knight SD1283 Night Hawk Edition cooler which performed an adequate job, if with significant noise under load. Processor temperatures were a few degrees higher under our torture tests than the competition, but still within acceptable limits.

The graphics card is the most powerful single card we've seen recently in a gaming PC - a Gigabyte-branded Nvidia GeForce GTX580 Super Overclock Series which is cooled by a row of five small fans. This version of the card sees the GPU clock speed boosted from the standard 1137 up to 1202 MHz and comes with OC Guru software to help you tune it still further.

As you might hope, this card coupled with the powerful Core i7 CPU produces some awesome gaming performance.

Final Fantasy XIV in particular experiencing significant performance gains. However, in other cases, such as Alien vs Predator and Sniper Elite V2, much lower-cost systems managed to deliver superior performance.

The Angry Lizard includes a separate soundcard. The Asus Xonar DGX is a gaming sound card with a built-in headphone amp. It also accelerates up to 128 simultaneous sound effects which can create a more immersive sonic experience, while relieving the CPU of the burden of some of the sound processing.

A 24in LG 24EN43VS-B monitor is included, which features a fast TN panel, slim design and easy-access perpendicular connectors, including VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs.

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboard doesn't offer Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so a plug-in Gigabyte Network card with 802.11n and Bluetooth has been included.

The system comes with a rather impressive-looking Saitek Cyborg V7 keyboard, featuring customisable illuminated keys with adjustable colours, and programmable keys. It's paired with a scary-looking Saitek Cyborg Rat 3 five-button mouse with four resolution settings up to 3500dpi, programmable buttons and customisable game profiles. Dual optical drives are provided for DVD burning and Blu-ray playback.
