Plextor M5 Pro SSD review: a solid SSD with fast read/write scores

It may not be the biggest name in SSD but Japanese company Shinano Kenshi, aka Plextor, is pushing to build a reputation as a leading player with dependable products. See allStorage reviews.

From its range of five different SSD series, the M5 Pro stands at the top, and proudly boasts 100,000 IOPS – one of the first consumer SATA drives to do so when it received its  enabling firmware upgrade last December. See Group test: what's the best SSD (solid-state drive)?

At heart is the same Marvell 88SS9187 controller as the Crucial, but running Plextor's custom firmware. Listed features include Robust Data Hold-out Algorithm for long-term read capability, and a 128-bit error-correction code. Take a look at the Corsair Neutron GTX 240GB SSD review too.

For quality assurance, Plextor tells us it subjected 400 units with 500 hours of extreme testing, with no failures. Each unit sold is also given a comprehensive burn-in test to weed out potential issues. Plextor backs up its faith in longevity with an attractive five-year warranty. When it comes to any essential firmware upgrade, Plextor offers an ISO boot disc that will work on a variety of computers.

In our lab, the Plextor M5 Pro also acquitted itself with some of the highest performance figures we've measured.  Its random read IOPS in AS SSD approached the magic 100,000 mark, with 98.1k read and 78.6 write IOPS, while busting into the three-figure territory in CDM with 103.3k peak IOPS reads. AS SSD also assigns a nominal point score based on the aggregate of weighted results, and here the M5 Pro came first with 1124 points.

Sequential read/writes in CDM showed a slightly read-centric tuning, 504 vs 437 MB/s, a pair of results close to that returned by ATTO, with 547 MB/s and 457 MB/s.
