Report: Chevrolet really interested in producing an affordable rear-wheel drive sports coupe for the young masses

AutomotiveNews reports that Chevrolet wants to continue increasing their product appeal to the younger generations by producing a “modestly priced, rear-wheel drive sports car.”

“A really nice, light, rear-drive car that’s inexpensive — we know that rings a bell,” GM’s Mark Reuss told AN. “That’d be a huge win for us if we had that.”

Although Reuss said that the idea of an affordable rear-wheel drive sports car has yet to begin as a project for the brand, General Motors hinted that they’re interested in the segment after unveiling their 2012 Chevrolet Code 130R coupe concept at the Detroit Auto Show in 2012. After the debut, Reuss said that the feedback was “really strong,” perhaps even strong enough to convince General Motors to begin research and development.

Ideally, this sports car would be priced in the low- to mid-$20,000 range and would go head-to-head with the likes of the Subaru BR-Z and Scion FR-S. Should GM give the project an approval, the potential rear-wheel drive sports car will be redesigned from the ground up as Reuss said that the Code 130R is already dated in terms of its design.
