Report: Volkswagen to debut new concept at 2013 Worthersee Festival, where the GTI W12-650 was unveiled in 2007

Volkswagen likes to stay in touch with some of its most dedicated loyalists and fans by making an official appearance at one of the largest Volkswagen and Audi gatherings in the world: the annual Worthersee Festival in Vienna, Austria.

In 2007, the People’s Car brand unveiled the Volkswagen GTI W12-650, which was a one-off concept car that was built with the Bentley Continental GT’s 6.0L W12 engine sitting in the middle—all 641hp and 531 lb-ft of torque included. The car was made to perpetuate the hype around the already infamous Volkswagen GTI.

For 2013, Volkswagen seeks to do it all over again with an all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept based on the current seventh generation model. Volkswagen’s R&D chief Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg told CAR Magazine UK that it will be far less dramatic.

“It won’t have as much power as the Golf GTI W12,” Hackenberg told CAR. “It will be more realistic.”

Hackenberg didn’t disclose too many details. However, CAR believes that the said concept-to-be at the 2013 Worthersee Festival is most likely going to preview an even hotter and more performance oriented variant of the already fairly capable Volkswagen GTI. It could sport more power, the GTI’s optional E-Diff as standard, and maybe even a carbon fiber roof. Though cost might prevent the latter from happening.

As of now however, anyone wanting a hot Volkswagen Golf can spring for the next-generation Golf R or the R-Line packaged Golfs as well.
