Report: Audi working on fuel-cell technology by expanding fleet with an A7-based model

AutoCarUK reports that Audi is in the midst of developing an A7-based hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle as auto makers move on from exploring electric powertrains.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles are once again gaining some exposure in the spotlights because fuel-cells generate electricity by simply combusting hydrogen. Chemistry and physics majors would kindly note that any sort of combustion involves adding oxygen molecules to a chemical reaction.

As a result, adding oxygen molecules to hydrogen molecules leads to the first most stable by-product, water, or H2O. Yup, the only thing coming out of the exhaust pipe of a fuel-cell driven vehicle is water.

Volkswagen and Audi in general have experimented with fuel-cell vehicles, such as the Audi Q5 HFC as recently as 2009. There’s no word as to when we could really expect a production fuel-cell vehicle.

Though the other major heap to overcome in the venture into hydrogen fuel-cells is its infrastructure. That of course needs to be developed first.
