Report: More details on next generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CLK to return, straight-sixes to be revitalized

Automobile was able to get the scoop on some details surrounding the all-new 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. So far, the outlet seems to have been a bit critical of the Silver Arrow’s recent productions. But after learning some new bits about what Mercedes has in store for the C-Class, Automobile happily reports that the C-Class is promising to be a good contender for the next generation.

For starters, word is that the C-Class will go on a 220lb diet and will offer some more fuel efficient engines, including a mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variant. Additionally, the next generation will offer a new level of packaging that will up the ante particularly in the active and passive safety departments, and a more comfortable ride.

Internally coded as the W205 C-Class, the lineup will also receive the same coupe, wagon, and sedan variants—and an extended wheelbase version specifically for China—though word is that Mercedes-Benz will revive the CLK nameplate for the C-Class coupe. And to boot, a convertible version is also said to be in the mix.

But in a strange move to potentially pilot a new niche market, Mercedes is also said to be introducing a CLE, which will slot just below the E-Class coupe but above the new future CLK-Class. Competitively, there’s not really much out there that will compete against a coupe, which is also described to “undercut” the future BMW 4-Series and the next generation Audi A5.

On the flipside however, Mercedes promised that the new CLK will be a “highly emotional driver’s car with good looks.

In a slightly other interesting twist, due to the recent news about Daimler’s partnership with Renault-Nissan, word is that the two manufacturers will be cooperatively working on a future straight-six engine, which will replace Mercedes-Benz’s current line of V6s. Now I don’t know about you, but that sounds like sex to my ears.

The report suggests that a launch sometime in 2017 is expected and will most likely debut on the next generation E-Class and C-Class models that will follow around that time.
