Report: NHTSA investigating 343,000 2007-2008 Honda Odyssey minivans over unintentional braking

TheDetroitBureau reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into 343,000 Honda Odyssey minivans, as reports have pointed to a fault with the braking system, in which case the brakes could apply on their own.

Honda has already recalled 180,000 cars this year due to braking issues and according to the NHTSA, 22 complaints have been submitted for models ranging from 2007-2008, all reporting unexpected braking. In some cases, owners claimed that vehicles dropped speed by as much as 30 mph, even while attempting to accelerate.

While many dealers with the reports not finding issues, some cases had technicians linking the problem to the steering angle sensor, which in turn are related to the braking system via the electronic stability control and anti-lock brake systems.

That said, faults with Honda’s patented VSA stability control program might be the culprit and is currently undergoing investigation.
