SONOS Launches Upgraded App with Universal Search, Improved User Interface

Since SONOS first launched its line of wireless music products back in 2003, many manufacturers have tried to duplicate the sound and the style of the company's products. SONOS has since become the standard for wireless whole-house music.

Now the company is hoping to make the app just as legendary. SONOS just announced a new Controller App with a brand-new, extremely interesting universal search feature. This allows users to search across a variety of music services, which seems pretty helpful considering how many streaming options are out there these days. The new version also has a much prettier, easier interface.

That interface includes three main modules for navigation between music that's currently playing, what room it's playing in, and how to find what to play next. It sounds sort of complicated on paper, because it combines a lot of features and music options. For the user, however, it can put the music you want where you want it. Even better, it can do that via a clean, easy-to-use app.

Speaking of easy, the universal search option will allow you to seek out songs, artists and albums across all of SONOS' services. For instance, typing "Katy Perry" into the search window will scout out what's available in Spotify, call up a station on Pandora, and even play a track through Hype Machine. Once the search is complete, you can access your selection in any room at the touch of a finger.

"It's been designed as a platform to bring you the best music experience for your home today, with the ability to adapt to what we have in store in the future," SONOS said in a statement.

Currently, the app is in beta. Android users can check it out now, by signing up for the beta program through the SONOS website. The company then plans to share the love with iOS, Mac and PC users sometime this spring.

A peek at the new universal search feature.
