OS X Yosemite - How You Can Get An Early Look

Apple’s latest operating system OS X Yosemite is coming this fall and users can expect some changes.

Apple has completely redesigned the interface with what they call a fresh new look that has “all the power and simplicity you know and love.” Let’s take a look at the desktop.

The company is very excited about the new translucent elements of the desktop including translucent toolbars and sidebars that allow you to view what’s behind your active window. (Side note: translucency is my least favorite part of Windows 7 Professional.)

The toolbars have streamlined. For example, the new look Safari lets you find sites using their smart search field (similar to Windows 8′s) or choose a tab view (like Chrome or Firefox) to see all open Safari tabs on your computer.

The dock has been redesigned with what Apple calls a more consistent look and feel with a new look for icons that the company feels makes them more recognizable.

The Notification Center has been updated to include a New Today feature that summarizes the day’s events, reminders and birthdays and quick access to widgets. The Notification Center can be accessed in any program with just a swipe.

Now, if you have an Apple computer that’s more than seven years old, you won’t be able to get the update. Yosemite will be available for iMac (mid-2007 or newer), MacBook Air (late 2007 or newer), MacBook (Late 2008, Aluminum, or early 2009 or newer), Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer), MacBook Pro (Mid/late 2007 or newer), Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) and Xserve (Early 2009).

OS X Yosemite is coming from Apple this fall, but if you’d like a chance to try it out early, you can head onover to Apple to sign up to be part of the preview.
