2019 Nissan Pathfinder Review

The 2019 Nissan Pathfinder has value and interior flexibility as its assets, but this crossover SUV is ripe for a redesign. Forget its rugged heritage. This big, three-row crossover SUV has a comfortable interior with a versatile second row and lots standard of active safety tech.

Thou - Magus Music Album Reviews

The Baton Rouge sludge-metal quintet's fifth proper full-length marks the latest tsunami in the endless storm of defeaning sound, political fury, and overwhelming prolificness that is Thou.
In more than a decade as a band, Baton Rouge sludge-metal quintet Thou have released music at a stunning rate. Collaborations with other outré metal acts, like the Body; splits with and covers of extreme brethren of all stripes; LPs and EPs and singles—they just never stop. Their immense catalog could be summed up as, say, post-metal stoner-doom with post-rock and ambient flourishes, but the sheer volume of their output seems more essential to their identity. And throughout all that material, even well before the “Great Awokening” made it trendy, they were pushing, and practicing, progressive politics. Magus, the band’s fifth proper full-length, heralds the latest tsunami in the endless storm of defeaning sound, political fury, and overwhelming prolificness that is Thou. The album surges and und…

Yves Tumor - Safe in the Hands of Love Music Album Reviews

Yves Tumor’s latest album is a benchmark in experimental music. It is searing and borderless, music that is aware of oppressive confinement, and music with an intoxicating urge to be free.
You can ask to be known and you can resist being defined all in the same breath. This is the demand at the center of Yves Tumor’s primal, beautiful, and beseeching new album, Safe in the Hands of Love. At no point in its duration do you have a clear sense of where, exactly, you are. Tumor has been identified as a noise artist but has released ambient tracks and made grooving songs that could pass for R&B and pop. Safe in the Hands of Love embraces it all. Few albums that feel this big wander so freely between genres and fewer still manage to invoke such intense emotions while remaining so inviting. It’s Tumor’s first project since signing to Warp, and it dwarfs everything the artist has released by several orders of magnitude. The leap is so audacious it’s disorienting.

Eminem - Kamikaze Music Album Reviews

All across his 10th album, the more things change, the more Eminem stays the same.
Released without prior announcement, only a tweet from the rapper saying that he “tried not 2 overthink this 1,” Kamikaze stands in one sense as a no-bullshit return to basics after the pop-minded bloat of last year’s lackluster Revival. It’s also the endlessly self-mythologizing star’s latest excoriation of journalists, perceived rivals, and just about anyone else who thinks his music sucks now. His career has become an exhausting feedback loop, and Kamikaze flies straight into that downward spiral.

Ninety7 Vaux Review

A review of the Ninety7 Vaux, a nifty gadget that makes your Echo Dot sound good and work without mains power.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED
US$49.99The Echo Dot is Amazon’s dinky Alexa speaker but while it’s fantastic value, it does lack the sound quality of its £150 sibling.

Google's Wear OS update has arrived

The smartwatch market is moving at a fast pace as Google releases Wear OS to keep up with Apple’s offering.
Google will be rolling out a software update for Smartwatches that use the Wear OS software today. This will be in fairly direct response to Apple launch of the Smartwatch series 4, and while the new update to wear OS is certainly an improvement, it’s still lagging behind Apple’s watchOS.

2019 Ford Super Duty F-250 Review

The 2019 Ford Super Duty maxes out on technology and convenience, but 32,000 pounds of pull keeps its bona fides intact. The 2019 Ford Super Duty heavy-duty pickup truck family runs the gamut from bare-boned work trucks to luxurious versions with swanky interiors and generously applied tech features.
Redesigned in 2017, the Super Duty shares some styling elements with the lighter-duty Ford F-150. Both are aluminum-intensive, but the Super Duty has more steel in its frame for better chassis strength, while the F-150 makes most of its body panels from lighter-weight material.

The Last Suit Movie Review

Nicely Pressed

"The Last Suit," the latest film by Argentine director/writer Pablo Solarzhat, starts out on a downbeat note as a family is pushing its patriarch out the door and into an old people's home. But, it then becomes a sweet, dramatic, and occasionally amusing tale of a senior citizen accomplishing a lifelong goal.

Withings Steel HR Sport Review

The Withings HR Steel Sport blends technology and design perfectly, featuring an analogue watchface and advanced fitness tracking support. Find out more in our review of the sporty smartwatch.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED
£199.95Withings has gone through a big change in recent years; it was bought by Nokia for around $191 million back in 2016, before being sold back to the original co-founder earlier this year after Nokia’s failed Digital Health rebranding. What better way to celebrate new (or is that old) ownership than to release one of the best smartwatches in the Withings collection?

Four Tet - Live at Funkhaus Berlin, 10th May 2018 Music Album Reviews

On what is only his second official live album in his 20-year career, the celebrated electronic producer demonstrates his range—and his mastery of tension and release.
Is there a producer more generous than Four Tet? While Kieran Hebden kept up a steady flow of records through much of the 2000s (not to mention a number of collaborative releases with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid), since rebooting his own Text Records imprint in 2007, he’s rewarded his fans with an abundance of music. He uploaded some of his earliest productions as a 38-minute deep dive, cobbled together nearly two decades of one-offs into a handy compendium, then made another for his other handle, Percussions. Beyond his own productions, Hebden openly shares his wide-roving tastes, regularly digging into his collection for an NTS Radio residency, not to mention nearing a thousand songs on his Spotify playlist.

Bruiser Brigade - Reign Supreme Music Album Reviews

Danny Brown’s ear for talent outweighs his larger-than-life persona on a mixtape that finds him ceding center stage to accentuate and support the voices of other rappers in his crew.
On August 24th, Danny Brown hopped on Twitch, a video game social network to play “Persona 5” with some virtual pals. After a while, he started playing new music, songs he insisted wouldn’t be released and were not part of the album he’s working on. Brown’s spent the last 10 years building a world so precise and nuanced that the playful tape emitting from his speakers had to be something different—something outside of Brown’s exacting grasp. That record, now circulating on the web, is a compilation from Brown’s Bruiser Brigade, a loose collection of Detroit rappers in their late-20s-to-mid-30s that have been his affiliates since he was an upper-and-downer-addled gangster rapper in the mid-2000s.

Wilder Maker - Zion Music Album Reviews

Gabriel Birnbaum’s urban Americana project intersperses grit and gloom with alluring glimpses of deliverance in the first installment of a planned musical novel on young adult life in Brooklyn.
If New York City is your trap, Wilder Maker will not be your escape hatch. The seven songs that make up Zion—the amorphous urban Americana project’s first album since the series of 2015 EPs that helped the band establish a more cohesive identity—form the first installment of a planned musical novel concerning the exigencies and ecstasies of young adult life in Brooklyn. Artists living in squalor long to find their big break before the city’s low-wage jobs and low-stakes friendships break them. Excitable pals tolerate inconveniences like late movers and rickety stairwells when they find a new apartment, all in the eternal search for adventures and lovers. A tardy cocaine dealer gives the narrator time to ask himself a verboten question: What if this incessant toil isn’t fucking worth it?

Asus ROG Phone Review: Hands-on

The Aus ROG Phone is here with the aim to be the best gaming smartphone in the world, but can it beat the Razer Phone? Find out what we think in our in-depth hands-on review from Computex 2018 in Taipei.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED Price TBCThe long awaited Asus gaming smartphone is here to take on the Razer Phone for the title of best gaming phone. The firm describes it as a ‘game-changing’ – pun intended, we assume – smartphone designed for mobile gaming. Here’s our Asus ROG Phone hands-on review.

2019 Chevrolet Sonic Review

The 2019 Chevrolet Sonic shows its age but remains a good choice for an inexpensive car with surprising technology. The city-friendly 2019 Chevrolet Sonic enters its eighth year with more candles on its cake, but little else. This subcompact sedan and hatchback lineup is showing its age.
For 2019, the Sonic adds an additional paint color, dubbed “Shock,” and otherwise carries over the LS, LT, and Premier trim levels, as well as sedan and hatchback body styles.

Apple iPhone XS Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9

If you're looking for a smartphone with a large display, then these two should be at the top of your list. We compare the iPhone XS Max compare to the Galaxy Note 9 to help you choose between them.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED Samsung Galaxy Note 9: From $999.99Apple iPhone XS Max: From $1,099 Samsung started the large phone craze when it released the first Note device back in 2011. Since then every other manufacturer has followed suit, with even Apple subsequently offering Plus-sized models.

2019 BMW X5 Review

The 2019 BMW X5 grows even closer to being the do-it-all vehicle in its family. Two decades ago, BMW had no SUVs in their lineup. Today, the X3 and now, the 2019 BMW X5, are two of the best vehicles they build, and are two of their best sellers.
Life comes at you fast. That’s even the case with the X5 xDrive40i and xDrive50i, the two new crossover SUVs BMW has to offer this year.

Armand Hammer - Paraffin Music Album Reviews

The latest release from billy woods and Elucid continues their hot streak. Even as they take on weighty societal issues, the pair maintain a light touch and a near-telepathic bond.
One summer in the mid-1990s, a young woman from Santa Cruz was renting an apartment in Harlem, off 139th Street. Earlier that same summer, she’d introduced her boyfriend—who had just finished his freshman year at a nearby college and who often stayed at the apartment with her—to a 16-year-old rapping prodigy who was evidently very into comic books. The two young men became fast friends. One day, burglars broke down the door to that apartment and stole, among other things, the young woman’s entire collection of CDs and tapes. The home invasion would be unremarkable if it hadn’t been recounted at the start of one of the pivotal records in underground rap, Cannibal Ox’s 2001 opus The Cold Vein. The rapping prodigy turned out to be Ox’s Vordul Mega. The older friend, who Vordul encouraged to rap, would kick arou…

IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance Music Album Reviews

The riffs come hard, fuzzy, and fast on the Bristol punks’ deeply passionate second album—and the platitudes follow close behind.
IDLES’ new album concerns the tragedies of illness and loss, the addict’s vacillation between sobriety and vice, and the discomfort of rational people at the current state of the world. Joe Talbot, the band’s sardonic, growling singer, lost his disabled mother, cleaned up his substance abuse, and watched the xenophobic Brexit go down—all while his Bristol-based post-punk quintet blew up in his home country. While they mined grief and addiction on their heralded 2017 debut, Brutalism, its follow-up seeks to further focus their notorious, explosive, tongue-in-cheek energy. Now the name of the game is to see past the pain: Joy as an Act of Resistance.

Mogwai - KIN: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Music Album Reviews

The Scottish group’s action flick soundtrack lacks their usual maximalist peaks but offers impressionistic sketches.
KIN is a movie about a futuristic bazooka that can blast walls out of buildings and instantly turn people into dust. The music of Mogwai has been known to do the same. But as the Scottish group have amassed enough soundtrack credits to qualify as the four-headed Hans Zimmer of indie rock, Mogwai’s film scores have typically avoided their more anarchic tendencies in favor of their more ambient, meditative qualities. And while KIN marks the band’s first dalliance with a mainstream Hollywood action flick after a handful of documentary and art-house efforts, their soundtrack ultimately emphasizes a subtlety not so readily gleaned from the Comic-Con-courting poster campaign.

2019 INFINITI QX80 Review

The 2019 Infiniti QX80 full-size luxury SUV is aging well, even though it’s still relatively aged. Big, luxury SUVs like the 2019 Infiniti QX80 feed our macho egos.
It boasts a tall seating position, big V-8, and impressive capabilities. Infiniti knows how to dress an interior too: The big QX80 has more leather and chrome than Harley-Davidson meetup, and we mean that in a good way.

Apple iPhone XR vs Huawei P20

Trying to decide between the iPhone XR and the Huawei P20? Let our comparison help: we explain how these phones differ for screens, cameras, water-resistance and many other features and specs.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED
$749All-new iPhones are few and far between, but the XR is one of them. Some are calling it the ‘cheap’ iPhone, but that’s purely relative. What it is is a new size of iPhone which offers many of the flagship features you’ll find in the iPhone XS (and Max) at a lower price with some funky colour options.

GoPro Hero 7 Black Review

The GoPro Hero 7 Black is here, complete with live streaming and 'gimbal-like' HyperSmooth stabilisation. Find out more in our full review.
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED

Szun Waves - New Hymn to Freedom Music Album Reviews

Luke Abbott’s synth/sax/drums trio illustrates the links between London’s fertile jazz scene and longstanding psychedelic traditions in six vibrant, unedited improvisations.
When mountains move, entire landscapes change—not just how we perceive them, but the physical properties of their dirt, what oenologists call terroir. One such tectonic shift appears to be taking place throughout the UK’s experimental-music scene. The rising profile of London’s jazz movement is pushing the immediacy and vibrancy of group improvisation far from the jazz community itself, creating an environment at once related and separate.

Big Red Machine - Big Red Machine Music Album Reviews

The debut collaboration of Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner is gorgeous and ponderous, a document of a creative process that feels a bit like watching someone get purposefully lost.
Big Red Machine want you to think of their music not as a definitive product but as an indefinite process. Maybe not in a sudden Kanye “Ima fix wolves” kind of way, but more like a document of a process. When an album is framed this way, you can perhaps experience something new outside of a consumer framework, free of the burden of marketing and metrics, and rewarding on its own pure terms. This is the punk theory offered by PEOPLE, the recently launched artist collective founded by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame, the National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner, and entrepreneurs Tom and Nadine Michelberger. PEOPLE functions as a digital space for artists to experiment and create without ads or pitiless streaming margins. It is indie music’s small war against ethical consumption in late capitalism.

JEFF the Brotherhood - Magick Songs Music Album Reviews

Three years into their return from the majors, the Orrall brothers have finally blossomed into a proper rock band—on an album that deconstructs the idea of what a proper rock band should sound like.
For most indie-rock bands, signing to a major label hardly presents the moral quandary it did, say, 25 years ago. In fact, these days, you barely even notice when it happens. (“I’m so bummed the War on Drugs signed to Atlantic,” said no one ever.) However, the destabilizing effects of getting dropped by a major label are as acute as they ever were. Back in the 1990s, even the most hardened and savvy indie-rock insurrectionists—be it the Jesus Lizard or Archers of Loaf—were never really the same after they got demoted from the big leagues. And in the more recent case of JEFF the Brotherhood, even an act that openly celebrated its dismissal from a major label can’t help but emerge from the experience a changed band.

If you're constantly switching between open applications, virtual desktops can make your life a lot easier. Here's how to use virtual Desktops in Windows 10.

2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Review

The 2019 VW Tiguan has a spacious interior and a comfortable ride, but its price climbs quickly. Among crossover SUVs, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out for its spacious interior—so long as every seat isn’t filled in seven-seat versions.
The VW Tiguan aces real-world utility with its excellent outward vision, comfortable interior, available active safety gear, and good infotainment system. It’s less thrifty than some rivals and its third row—well, the dog will like it.

Lenovo Miix 630 Review

The Miix 630 is Lenovo's first Windows device running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor - in this case the Snapdragon 835. It promises a 20-hour battery life and always-on 4G LTE, but can it deliver?
PRICE WHEN REVIEWED
From $799.99The Lenovo Miix 630 2-in-1 is one of the first three Windows 10 devices powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor - rather than an Intel chip. The HP Envy x2 and Asus NovaGo released earlier this year, but Lenovo has waited a little longer to release the Miix 630.

Anna Calvi - Hunter Music Album Reviews

On her first album in five years, the goth-rock guitar virtuoso abandons her typically detached perspective to ruminate on gender, sexuality, and identity with newfound urgency.
In the seven years since she released her self-titled debut album, British singer-songwriter Anna Calvi has reached a rarefied level of critical acclaim. Her haunting, operatic voice and complex guitar playing, rough and gentle at once, have made her the darling of the UK press. Calvi’s songs get heavy rotation on BBC Radio 6, and she has two Mercury Prize nominations to her name. But virtuosity doesn’t always yield inspiration. While 2013’s One Breath and the 2014 EP Strange Weather continued to showcase her considerable talent for lovelorn, gothic rock, they also felt a bit too familiar, as though Calvi had reached the peak of her impressive abilities too soon.

Mass Gothic - I’ve Tortured You Long Enough Music Album Reviews

Noel Heroux of Hooray for Earth enlists his wife, Jessica Zambri, for a bombastic, exhausting album that betrays a deep desire to emulate Funeral-era Arcade Fire.
Mass Gothic’s second album begins and ends with a window. At first, the window is dark; by the end of the record, it’s merely big. Presumably the sun has come up. Between “Dark Window” and “Big Window,” this project from Hooray for Earth’s Noel Heroux exudes so much bombast as to become exhausting. While the first Mass Gothic record was essentially a Heroux solo outing, I’ve Tortured You Long Enough loops in his wife, Jessica Zambri, who co-wrote the album and sings throughout. The couple adopts a dynamic reminiscent of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne—at many points, I’ve Tortured You betrays its deep desire to be an early Arcade Fire release—but their songwriting choices don't support their incessant swings for the rafters.

George Clanton - Slide Music Album Reviews

The “vaporwave opera” tag is a red herring: The electronic musician formerly known as Mirror Kisses has grown into his most fully realized vision of pop yet.

Porsche to stop making diesel vehicles

Porsche has said that it ‘has decided to no longer offer diesel propulsion in future’ due to a falling demand and a growing interest in hybrid engines.
As Porsche moves out of the diesel market, CEO Oliver Blume does mention that the company isn’t “demonising diesel” and that it’s still important across the world. However, diesel-powered cars have never been a large part of Porsche’s line-up so switching to a focus on hybrid and electric power makes sense for the German giant.
