Hayden Thorpe - Diviner Music Album Reviews

The former Wild Beasts singer embarks on a new direction on his soul-searching solo debut, stripping back his songwriting to a reverent hush.
The British singer-songwriter Hayden Thorpe released “Diviner” in late February 2019, just a year after the final performance of his band Wild Beasts. From its stark opening chords and breathy first line—“I’m a keeper of secrets, pray do tell”—the song sounded markedly personal. With little more than his stately countertenor and humble piano, Thorpe harnessed the energy of quiet solitude and proceeded to pitch that emotion skyward until the music felt bathed in a dim light. After more than a decade with Wild Beasts, “Diviner” pointed to a different direction for Thorpe.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro Release Date, Price & Specification Rumours

Could the Mate 30 Pro have five rear cameras?
Huawei's already working on its next flagship phone, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, but will its recent spat with Google affect that upcoming smartphone's software? Here's what we know about the Mate 30, including when it will launch, how much it will cost, and what specifications and features you can expect.

Huawei had been on a roll with consumers in the Europe and UK flocking to buy its handsets, but now Google may have thrown a huge spanner in the works.

Following the US President Trump's addition of Huawei to a trade blacklist, Google has vowed to comply with the order and consider the implications. Though it will continue to support all existing Huawei phones with security updates, future devices (bar tomorrow's launch of the Honor 20) will not be able to run its services and apps.

Technically Huawei can still use Android, but it will be restricted to the open-source version, but its phones will lose access to the Google Play store and associated apps.

It's possible things may change before the Mate 30's October release, though we may see some very different software onboard.

That's a shame for consumers, since the Mate 20 Pro is an excellent phone and its successor should be even better. It packs in a whole load of features including the new Kirin 980 processor, three rear cameras, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, 3D face scanner and reverse wireless charging as well as normal wireless charging.

So what else can Huawei do to improve upon both the Mate 20 Pro? That's the question we'll attempt to answer here based upon the latest rumours, patents, leaks and the stuff we want to see in the new phone.

Mate 30 Pro Release Date Rumours
Expected announcement date: 16 October 2019

Huawei has adopted a regular release schedule. It launches the new P-series phones early in the year and then updates the Mate series later in the autumn.

For the last couple of years, the new Mate phone has launched in the middle of October and there's no reason to suspect Huawei will change things around in 2019.

Mate 30 Pro Price Rumours
With flagship phone prices on the rise, it's possible that the Mate 30 will be the most expensive Huawei phone yet.

The Mate 20 Pro costs £899, up from the £799 that the Mate 10 Pro cost. Could the Mate 30 Pro cost £999? It's not beyond the realms of possibility, but we suspect it won't rise that much.

Ultimately, we'll have to wait until the announcement in October to find out.

Mate 30 Pro Feature & Spec Rumours
If one thing is sure, the Mate 30 will get an upgraded processor. Huawei usually announces the chip at IFA in September before launching the phone in October. And it'll probably be called the Kirin 990: it doesn't take a genuis to see where the naming strategy is headed.

Huawei's CEO, Richard Yu, says that Huawei will continue to focus on AI in 2019. In an open letter he stated, "We believe in the power of AI and are committed to using technology to extend the boundaries of what is humanly possible. For example, we are working with several organizations to leverage Huawei AI to help deaf children learn to read by translating select children’s books into sign language, and to develop a tool that identifies visual abnormalities."

Again, this isn't a surprise. All phone chip makers are investing in AI R&D and predict that within the next decade phones will have proper artificial intelligence rather than the 'AI' assistants and apps that we're seeing today.

The Kirin 990, then, will likely take the next step in making this a reality with even better NPU performance.

It's way too early to know what might change about the screen size or resolution. The only information so far - via Mobielkopen - is that Huawei has filed a patent for a phone case with a larger-than-before camera cutout.
Instead of the square arrangement on the Mate 20 Pro, the cutout is now rectangular. This could well be to house an extra two cameras, bringing the total to five.

It wouldn't be the only phone with such a high number of lenses: the Nokia 9 PureView is said to have a 'penta-camera' on the rear as well.

Whether Huawei would use the extra lenses for even more zoom or something else entirely remains to be seen.

We'll update this article as and when more details emerge on the Mate 30 Pro.

Huawei MateBook 14 Review

The MateBook 14 is one of Huawei's new laptops for 2019 and is the perfect all-rounder. Find out why in our full review.
Should I Buy The Huawei MateBook 14?
The MateBook 14 might be a slightly chunkier and heavier version of the flagship X Pro, but the weight is a small price to pay considering that this laptop is a much cheaper option.
What you lose (or gain, really) in weight, is made up for by additional ports, better performance and longer battery life. You only really need to pass on this if Thunderbolt is an absolute must.
