Burn Movie Review

Sizzlingly Odd
In his debut feature, writer/director Mike Gan has created a small film that, if there's justice, will attain a cult-like status. "Burn" takes place in the course of one evening and entirely within the confines of a rural, out-of-the-way gas station shop.
It's the kind of place that loners might wander into for a hot cup of coffee at 3am. Obviously this is not a big budget film, but Gan squeezes an awful lot of goodness out of it. Maybe we should call it badness.

Disintegration Preview

Disintegration could be the most unique shooter in years

Should I Buy The Disintegration?
We're withholding our final judgement until Disintegration is released, but we're excited by what we've seen so far.

Disintegration is the first title from V1 Interactive, a small 30-person team founded by one of the co-creators of the hugely popular Halo series, and that influence is evident in both the gameplay and narrative of the game. Combining FPS and RTS gameplay, Disintegration looks to offer something unique in a market full of shooters of all shapes and sizes, and we got to spend some time playing the game at Gamescom 2019.

Here’s what we think so far.

Disintegration Release Date And Platforms
Disintegration doesn’t have a release date just yet, but Private Division has teased that it’ll be released in 2020 and will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC – sorry Switch fans!

In a world where pollution, war and famine are slowly wiping out humanity, a choice had to be made: live or die. Humans being humans, they weren’t going to go down without a fight and thus, came up with the Integration initiative. The idea was to remove the human brain and place it in a robotic body, freeing up the need to eat, sleep and perform other humanly functions. It was meant to be a temporary measure, with the aim of fixing Earth’s problems and returning to the squishy bodies we all know and love.

However, not everyone wanted to ditch the robo-suits, instead seeing the Integration initiative as the next step in human evolution. These radicals became known as Radon, and have a single aim; to integrate everyone on planet Earth, and wipe out those who refuse to undergo the transformation.

Like most modern games, Disintegration is split into two main components; a narrative-driven single-player story and an online multiplayer mode. The single-player campaign puts you in the shoes (or should that be robot skin?) of Romer, the leader of a gang of outlaws with one purpose: to stop Radon from taking over Earth and Integrating its inhabitants.

We played through a few rounds of Retrieval, a 5v5 online multiplayer mode that pits players against each other with the aim of transporting nuclear cores across enemy territory. It’s vaguely similar to Capture the flag, a game mode popular with first-person shooters, but it offers more action – and importantly, more strategy – than standard multiplayer shooters.

It’s a unique take on the FPS genre, combining the action of a shooter with the tactics of a real-time strategy game to create something unlike anything we’ve played before.

The concept is relatively simple; you hover above the battlefield in a gravcycle mounted with various weapons, and order your ground units to various points of interest in the environment. The ground-soldiers do the majority of your bidding, and boast a variety of special abilities including stun grenades, mortar strikes and more that can help turn the tide of the game, but you can provide additional support with your heavy artillery.

Of course, it goes without saying that there are a variety of characters and gravcycles to choose from, each offering something slightly different. The types reflect the standard tank, healer and support roles from popular MOBA titles, allowing you to find the right character to suit your personal play style. And like with most MOBAs, communication is key; without your team backing your play and co-ordinating efforts, it’s likely that you’ll get your ass handed to you.

We’re very excited by what Disintegration has to offer, and we can’t wait to find out more about the game in the run up to its release in 2020.

John Wick Hex Preview

We played John Wick Hex with developer Mike Bithell at Gamescom 2019. Here's how he elevated a movie tie-in into a full John Wick sim
Should I Buy The John Wick Hex?
John Wick Hex is basically a top-down tactics game with the time system of Frozen Synapse or Superhot, but it’s maybe best to think of it as its own new genre: the John Wick sim.
From top to bottom this is meant to make you feel like Keanu’s iconic assassin, and the remarkable thing is that even with a floating camera and cel-shaded visuals it absolutely achieves it. WWJWD?
