Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky Music Album Reviews

Each Sunday, Pitchfork takes an in-depth look at a significant album from the past, and any record not in our archives is eligible. Today, we revisit a tense, beautiful, lo-fi landmark from the second wave of black metal.
In the fall of 1971, a child is born in a remote village in Norway. He will one day rechristen himself Fenriz, after the Earth-swallowing wolf, Fenrir, who appears in Norse mythology and the Satanic Bible. But for now, he is Gylve Nagell, being raised by his grandmother, spending inordinate amounts of time alone. The pivotal moments of his childhood occur while listening to records, music introduced to him by an eccentric uncle named Stein. Pink Floyd catches his ear; a few songs by the Doors hold his attention; but it’s the English progressive rock band Uriah Heep that blows his mind. He’s entranced by the heavy organ sound, the cryptic lyrics, and the mysterious men with long hair who appear on the album’s cover. He cherishes the triple-fold LP like an heirloom from…

Moto E6 Plus Review: Hands-On With Motorola’s New Budget Phone

One of two new Moto phones at IFA 2019, the E6 Plus is an affordable phone that offers incredible value. Here are our first impressions.

Should I Buy The Moto E6 Plus?
Motorola is a brand that is characterized by offering phones with an almost unbeatable value for money. Our first impressions of the Moto e6 plus tell us that this could be a quality economic phone, very suitable for any average user who does not demand too much from a phone.

If the price is a determining factor when you decide on a phone or another, then this could be the model you are looking for (yes, forget about tools such as water resistance, wireless charging or NFC). However, we will have to wait until we can prove it for a longer time to be able to make a decision about your correct verdict.

Price When Reviewed
  • TBC
The Moto E6 Plus was one of the highlights from Motorola at IFA 2019, an affordable phone that offers a strong specification for those on a strict budget.

Not everyone wants to spend a packet on the fastest, most powerful phones, with all their associated bells and whistles. For those users, in the E6 Plus Motorola has put together a nice design, good cameras and capable hardware at a very low price.

We’re not sold on the lack of NFC and USB-C, but if all you want is a phone that can make calls, send texts, get online and use a few casual apps, the Moto E6 Plus could be the one for you.

Price & Availability
Moto E6 Plus will go on sale in the UK on 30 September, but is available to pre-order now at £99.99. Four colours are available, each with a gradient finish.
Build & Design
Despite its low price the E6 Plus achieves a much more premium design than previous models in the line. Its screen is a real standout, thanks to slimmer bezels and a new waterdrop notch that houses the 8Mp selfie camera.

The chin is still a little chunky, alluding to its budget roots, but with its nicely rounded corners that are so characteristic of the brand and pleasing overall design it’s hard to complain.

Adding to the feeling of a premium design is a mirror-like finish at the rear. Unfortunately this does mean it becomes something of a fingerprint magnet, as you can see in our photos.

This is a 6.1in screen with an HD+ resolution of 1560x720 pixels, and a screen-to-body ratio of 80%.

A fingerprint sensor is found at the rear, integrated to the Motorola logo. There’s a dual-lens camera to its left, and we were pleased to find it doesn’t protrude enough to make the phone rock on a desk.

Core Hardware
This was actually one of two new Motorola phones announced at IFA 2019. With the Motorola One Zoom standing out for its cameras, the Moto E6 Plus seems to suffer as a result. But actually this is the first in the line to incorporate a dual-lens camera - if only just: while there’s a primary 13Mp lens, the secondary is simply a 2Mp depth sensor that will be useful in achieving a bokeh (blurred background) effect.

The main lens has an f/2.0 aperture, which helps it to take better photos in low light without the quality suffering. Flagship phones will specify closer to f/1.6, but this is more than reasonable for the money. We’ll reserve our final verdict until we’ve had a chance to conduct more thorough testing.

The core specs are basic, as you might expect. For memory you get a choice of 2- or 4GB of RAM, and in a world where we’re increasingly seeing 8GB that seems rather low, but it will suffice for casual use.

Internal storage fails to impress us at 32GB, with 64GB as an option, but again, remember this is a budget phone. And do note the inclusion of a microSD card slot, which lets you expand storage by up to 512GB later.

Motorola covers all the basics, even stretching to biometric security with the rear fingerprint sensor and support for face unlock, but some users would argue its omission of NFC is a step too far. If you want to be able to make mobile payments you need this connectivity. Omissions such as fast- or wireless charging and waterproofing are easier to forgive at this price.

Although we have not yet been able to confirm this, Lenovo claims the internal 3,000mAh battery will last up to two days. Given the low-power hardware inside we are inclined to take its word for it, though naturally how long it actually lasts will depend on your usage.

We really need to spend more time with Motorola’s new budget phone before we can give a definitive verdict, but this is clearly a smartphone that will appeal to those on a tight budget. For less demanding users who do not wish to download too many games and aren’t fussed by extra features such as fast charging the E6 Plus will serve them well.
